Comments get an overhaul ....
Posted May 2, 2008
I would consider the ability to comment on stories at Independentmail.com one of the best features of our web site. It seems like you agree. A year ago, we were seeing about one comment a day. Now that number is close to 50 or more.
That’s why we're happy to unveil improvements in the way we manage them.
The most important and the most sensitive change, of course, has been the addition of a wideranging user-contributions policy, which basically is aimed at keeping our site family friendly, and, for want of a better word, civilized. We want to avoid the flame wars, foul language and offensive commentary that seems to be part and parcel of typical online forums.
As part of this added layer of oversight, we're considering adding a banned words list as well as a "bleep filter" that will alert someone who types in a word or phrase that violates our policy and will encourage that person to speak more civilly.
You also may already have noticed a small but significant improvement that will make following conversations between commenters a little easier: Posters can respond directly to an individual comment by clicking the 'Reply To This Post' link.
We think you'll be particularly fond of the new ability to take a look at the history of comments made by commenters. Anytime you see a users name, you may click on it to be directed toward a page listing every comment they have ever posted.
No doubt this help us grasp the personalities of these "anonymites" who are playing an increasing role in giving "life" to our news community, and it will enable readers to hold commenters accountable for the twists and turns in their arguments to some degree.
Let us know what you think....

Once again I "love" the way this paper really cares about Anderson. I am well aware that it was late last night (11:00 P.M. to be exact), BUT another really wonderful thing happened for a young adult from Anderson! Guess what, I guess all the newspaper staff has an early curfew, because there is NOTHING in the paper about Bailey Hanks being named Elle Woods for the Broadway play! NOTHING! Well let me explain something real simple, it appears that if it is good news about someone in Anderson that reflects well on her/his family, and her/his community - by George, we can't tell good news in Anderson. Way to go AGAIN to the Editor, Publisher and staff! Hope your beauty rest was worth it.
