Clemson-Wake halftime thoughts
Posted October 9, 2008
Well, if you've watched this one (or at least managed not to cover your eyes), you'd agree this is the most lopsided 3-0 halftime score man will ever see. Wake Forest has totally dominated this game - they led first-quarter yardage 120 to -3, and while Clemson came alive somewhat in the second quarter, the Demon Deacons should be up at least 17-0 right now, owing to a bad snap on a 25-yard field goal in the first quarter, an inability to convert on first and goal from the 5, and a badly missed 39-yard field goal by Shane Popham. In fact, tonight's biggest story might be the strained quad of Wake kicker Sam Swank, which has forced Popham into action. He does have the only points tonight with a 22-yard field goal.
Clemson's offense has struggled to establish the run and downfield pass, and injuries which have sidelined both starting guards (Cory Lambert and Mason Cloy) haven't helped either. C.J. Spiller also limped to the sidelines midway through the second quarter and hasn't returned; trainers appeared to be working on his hamstring on the sidelines.
This game is still up for grabs, but Clemson must improve markedly in the second half to grab it.
