Bowden gone
Posted October 13, 2008
I was driving to a doctor's appointment a little over an hour ago when I heard the news: Tommy Bowden is finished at Clemson. Color me surprised.... I figured Clemson would at least give him the chance to finish the season and turn things around before giving him the ax. But at 3-3, 1-2 in ACC play (including a loss to Atlantic Division leader Wake Forest), a division title was unlikely at best - Clemson would have to go undefeated and hope Wake lost 3 ACC games the rest of the way to have any shot at the title. So it's bye-bye to Bowden - a good man who simply couldn't get the job done in nine-plus seasons at Clemson.
“Terry Don Phillips approached me this morning and we agreed that this is the best solution for the direction of the program,” Bowden said in a statement released by Clemson. “Clemson has been very good to me and my family. Both of our children are Clemson graduates.
“I appreciate the opportunity Clemson University gave me and the support of the administration while I was here. I also want to thank all the student-athletes and coaches who worked so hard for this program the last 10 years.
“I wish Clemson University nothing but the best in the future.”
Reaction is already rolling in, and it's not pretty.Take Cullen Harper, who spouted off to ESPN.com about the firing after getting benched for freshman Willy Korn.
"They just told us. It's what he deserved," Harper told ESPN.com. " (Interim coach) Dabo Swinney is a fine man and will do an excellent job."
Ouch.
