How to be inspired

Posted December 4, 2007

To be honest, I was not sure how to best kick-off a blog. Particularly a blog focused on recruitment, marketing/business development, retention, expansion- in short, Economic Development. Not necessarily a topic easily digested.

We will have plenty of time to discuss and define Economic Development and the working components of it over time.

And because we will go down that road as time progresses, I thought I’d start by explaining what has “inspired” me to be part of Economic Development.

Right, wrong, or indifferent- I have felt nothing adds more to a person’s identity than knowing they part of something. Most people want to feel they are adding value: adding value to their church, their family, their community, their team, etc. To me, a person’s self-esteem is directly proportional to their contribution or value back to the items we just mentioned.

This whole idea all begins for me by having a job, just a job. Not that it is that simple or am I saying that having a job solves every person’s problems. It is not the answer by itself, but certainly a part of the answer.

To me, it is the part that I can try the best to impact.

I’ve seen what happens to communities that suffer major recessions as their factories close. I’ve seen people’s self-worth evaporate with the job they had just lost, sometimes to no fault of their own or the company itself. I’ve seen the depression left at being unemployed.

Economic Development is the title I give to something that gives us the best opportunity to create jobs in our community in order to add value. Economic Development is the culmination of resources being brought together for that simple statement of creating jobs.

I assure you, if we did nothing- nothing will be the result. So this is my reason for working in the field I do, it is my way to contribute.

I am inspired to be part of Economic Development in Anderson.
