STORY TOOLS

Last week, we put together more about fantasy football and the playoffs and all that junk. Well, since I am out of all my playoff scenarios and most people will be finishing up their playoffs this week or next, I thought it was time to have those year-end awards that most fantasy football columnists do this time of year.

Who was the best? Who was the biggest bust? Who came out of nowhere to surprise the whole league? And who led their team to the promised land and all the “entertainment” that a non-money league can muster?

All the answers come to you FFers as I give you my fantasy gift of the season. Your fantasy football awards. I call them, the Grovers.

THE HEISMAN

Best fantasy player

This has to go to Tom Brady. The guy has thrown for almost 50 touchdowns, thrown for a ridiculous amount of yards and this will go down as one of the best fantasy football seasons of all time. Now, whether or not he can lead you to victory during the bad weather of December is another thing altogether, but if you had him, it was Brady that led you there.

THE MARQUES COLSTON AWARD

Biggest surprise

This year’s biggest surprise had to be a tie between Braylon Edwards and Derek Anderson, both of the Cleveland Browns. No one thought this offense would be as good as it has been and these guys are the reasons why. Edwards has caught more than a dozen TDs and Anderson has thrown more than 20 on the year. Heck, I knew guys who were starting Anderson above Peyton Manning at one point. That’s the very definition of a surprise.

THE MARIO WILLIAMS AWARD

Biggest bust

Everyone thought Mario Williams was a bust last year, so that’s where the name comes from. As for who was the biggest bust this year, that honor goes to Larry Johnson. This guy was supposed to be the second coming of Priest Holmes for fantasy owners and he was — just not in a good way. After two stellar seasons, the Chief’s Larry Johnson barely played and simply made teams who drafted him high sick with loss after loss after loss.

THE TOM BRADY AWARD

Best value

Tom Brady has proven that late-round draft picks can be real gems. This year, late rounders like Braylon Edwards and Randy Moss proved that as well. But the one that most people will look to will be Wes Welker of the Patriots. This guy just catches touchdowns and was a major compliment to the success of many fantasy teams.

THE KICKER AWARD

Best kicker on waivers

Every year, kickers prove why there is no reason to draft kickers on high on your board. Some rookie will always come along on the waivers and play big. Mason Crosby of the Green Bay Packers was no exception. If you waited like a smart owner, you got this guy for a song without having to blow a draft pick with all the other suckers.
