The Cliffs at Keowee Falls will be the epicenter of youth golf this coming weekend as the American Junior Golf Association will host the inaugural Cliffs Championship April 26-27. The site is a Jack Nicklaus Signature course and one of eight in The Cliffs’ collection.
Located on the shores of Lake Keowee, the 160-acre course features rolling, mountainous terrain and offers a challenging par-72, 7,171-yard layout.
The international field, however, should be up to the challenge.
The boys division features Wren High School standout Corbin Mills, who will be one of the players to watch in the 51-player field. He’ll be joined by Kevin Phelan of St. Augustine, Fla.
Phelan won the AJGA’s Mizuno Junior at Innisbrook March 23, posting a 71-70-70–211 total.
He ranks No. 39 in the Polo Golf Rankings among all junior golfers in the country.
Seneca High School’s Austin Ernst and Wren’s Anna Martin highlight the 27-player girls’ field. Ernst and Asheville, N.C.’s, Stephanie Wagstaff are Rolex Junior All-Americans and pre-tournament favorites.
Ernst, a sophomore, was named an honorable mention Junior All-American in 2007 after winning two AJGA events and finishing fourth at a third. She is currently ranked No. 47 in the Polo Golf Rankings.
Wagstaff, a senior at A.C. Reynolds High School, is ranked No. 35 in the PGR and was also a 2007 honorable mention All-American. Last year, she finished in the top 10 at five of six AJGA tournaments she competed in.
The Scholastic Junior All-American recently signed a letter of intent with Tulane University.
In all the event boasts 78 players from 20 states, as well as Canada, Denmark and Northern Ireland.
The first round will be held Saturday with the final round set for Sunday. Tee times will be at 8 a.m. both days, with play starting on the first and 10th tees.
An awards ceremony will immediately follow play Sunday.
Alumni of the AJGA include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Stewart Cink, Davis Love III, Cristie Kerr, Pat Hurst, Paula Creamer, Brittany Lincicome, Morgan Pressel and Julieta Granada.
