STORY TOOLS

Leonard Bernstein has been the musical force behind some of the most beloved musicals of all time, such as “West Side Story” and “On The Town.” He also has proved himself an accomplished composer of sacred pieces that blend beauty and faith into one musical movement.

On May 9, the Greater Anderson Musical Arts Consortium will bring its Chorale and Orchestra together for a night to celebrate this multitalented, legendary composer and his lifetime of work.

“This concert is a sort of picked program that shows a variety of his music,” said Vivian Hamilton, who will direct the chorale while Alex Spainhour conducts the orchestra.

The program will include Bernstein’s sacred work for choir and orchestra as well as his most popular musical theater pieces from “Candide” and more.

Hamilton said the layout of the concert was intended to include music that is exciting for the audience, appealing to everyone and challenging for the players.

The show also will feature a handful of soloists, starting with Jordan Parales on Chichester Psalms; Paul Sewell, tenor; Megan Reader, soprano; and Chorale members Beth Foster, Jane Jacobi, David Turner, Addrian Wilson, Kathryn Heeney and Ed Long.

The show will begin at 8 p.m. May 9 at the Henderson Auditorium at Anderson University. Tickets are $25 for adults and $12 for students and can be purchased through the GAMAC office at 864.231.6147.
