Seneca’s Robert Godfrey shot a 2-over-par 74 Saturday in the third round of the South Carolina Golf Association Amateur Championship, but that was still good enough to put him just four strokes out of the lead at 216.
Anderson’s Patrick Rada, however — who was tied for second Friday — shot an 80 in the third round to fall seven strokes off the pace (219) in the event at Musgrove Mill Golf Club in Clinton.
Playing under cooler conditions, Gaffney’s Josh Gallman tied for the low round of the day at 5-under-par 67 for a one shot lead and a tournament total of 212.
First round leader Will Oldham of Spartanburg shot an even par round of 72 to get back in the hunt and the brother tandem of George Bryan IV and Wesley Bryan are all tied for second place.
Caleb Sturgeon, the 15-year-old leader after the first two rounds, got off to a slow start, shooting 43 on his first nine holes. He fought off what could have been a disastrous round with an even par 36 on the final nine. Sturgeon is four back at even par 216.
With tees pushed back and tougher course conditions, the average score for the day was 76 and only 10 players broke par. The same conditions are expected for today’s final round, which begins today at 8 a.m. off the No. 1 and No. 10 tees.
Other area players competing include Casey Smith of Abbeville (220), Josh Branyon of Honea Path (221), Allen Koon of Anderson (221), Drew Ernst of Seneca (223), Michael Sims of Clemson (224) and Pendleton’s Jordan Byrd (231).
The 77th annual SCGA Amateur Championship is being played on the par 72, 6,933-yard Arnold Palmer designed course in Clinton. The event began with a field of 137 players and was cut to the low 70 and ties after the first two days of play.
The Amateur Championship is one of 19 Major Championships run by the South Carolina Golf Association and is in its 77th year of existence.
