Belton-Honea Path is just one of several area teams battling what seems to be a worse than usual preseason for injuries.
As B-HP prepares for the season opener at Laurens, coach Wayne Green said senior receiver Chancey Latimer (concussion), senior linemen Blake Parker (concussion) and Justin Shaw (knee), and junior running back Alex Mitchell (appendicitis) may be limited, or out this week.
“I can’t even keep up with them,” Green said of the injury list. “Every time somebody gets hurt, we have to move people around and when you have to move them around, it’s hard to get any continuity with anything you’re doing.”
Green said his young players would get a stiff early test against the Raiders, who return 16 players from last season’s 7-5 team.
Senior receiver Travis Burnside is a key player among those 16. He caught a touchdown pass last season in B-HP’s 28-14 win, and Green’s aware that his experienced secondary will pay special attention to Burnside.
HIGH SCHOOL LEAGUE VISITS HANNA
The S.C. High School League paid T.L. Hanna a visit on Monday to check player eligibility. Coach Kenya Fouch said the SCHSL had “repeated reports” that Hanna was using ineligible players.
“In his words, our records were impeccable,” Fouch said of the SCHSL representative. “He said we were very organized, and was glad we were as prepared as we were.”
Fouch said the visit lasted three hours, and records were examined thoroughly. Hanna learned of the visit on Friday. Fouch said he had suspicions where the reports came from, but nothing substantial.
BULLDOGS LOOK FOR CONSISTENCY
Pendleton coach Paul Sutherland was lukewarm when describing his Bulldogs after the preseason concluded.
“At times we played as well as we’ve had teams play in the preseason, other times we’ve played poorly,” Sutherland said. “Haven’t been consistent as I’d like. Good defense one day, good offense one day.”
The Bulldogs travel to Seneca this week for their first game against the Bobcats since 2001. The last four games of the series have been lopsided toward Seneca. The Bobcats have outscored the Bulldogs 177-12 in that span.
CRESCENT’S BEACH BYE WEEK
Crescent will make a unique trip during its bye week on Friday: the Tigers are heading to the beach.
Coach Troy Gamble said the team would travel to Lakewood Campground in Myrtle Beach to enjoy a weekend of team building activities. Gamble said he’s visited the camp often with his wife’s family, and the holiday weekend gives the team a day to travel. The team does team building activities every season, but the open date gave it a chance to do something unique, Gamble said.
“That helps us a lot more than Xs and Os,” Gamble said. “Playing as a family and playing as one.”
