ANDERSON A car explosion at the Anderson Sports and Entertainment Center Thursday night left at least three people injured, including a public safety officer.
A city of Anderson Police Department spokesperson said authorities are investigating the possibility that the explosion was caused by a mobile methamphetamine lab, according to a report from Independent-Mail coverage partner WSPA News Channel 7.
“There was some type of explosion to the vehicle that caused burns to the patients,” said Matthew Littleton, deputy chief of Anderson County emergency services public safety division.
Littleton said further investigation must be done to determine the cause of the explosion. Authorities received the call about the incident around 8:36 Thursday night.
Two adult males who were not public safety officials suffered first- and second-degree burns as a result of the explosion, and information was not immediately available about hospitalization of those people, authorities told the Independent-Mail.
A public safety officer was transported to AnMed Health Medical Center in Anderson and was under evaluation as of Thursday night, Littleton said. That officer had heard and responded to the explosion, Littleton said. More information about the medical status of those injured was not available from authorities Thursday night.
City of Anderson police and firefighters, the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, Medshore Ambulance Service and hazardous materials response workers were called to scene at the ballfield area at the Sports and Entertainment Center near Civic Center Boulevard in Anderson.
The car that exploded was a four-door sedan.
The explosion happened while hundreds of children and parents were at the Sports and Entertainment Center attending soccer games. Several parents report hearing a loud explosion, according to the WSPA report.
WSPA News Channel 7 and Independent-Mail night editor Alison Newton contributed to this report.

Hundreds of parents attending soccer games?
Come on guys, get your story straight. There were about 25 kids and parents at a soccer practice and maybe 50 or so people at two softball games.
Well, this story was derived from the Channel 7 news report...uh, wait a minute, isn't this reporter supposed to be local, local, local? Hmm.....
I can see it coming now....I'll bet this is Joey Preston's fault. Let's see, he authorized hiring police officers, which means that they have had enough manpower to target meth labs, so the meth labs have had to become mobile to aviod detection.
Obviously the "Gang of Five" is also partially at fault for enacting laws that makes it illegal to manufacture meth, thus necessitating the mobile drug lab to avoid detection.
What I really want to know though, is who authorized the use of ASEC for such dangerous events as public soccer games and practices? They are the ones who should really be called onto the carpet for allowing this many innocent people to be in a public place and exposed to hazards such as this.
Did I miss any salient points?
mobile meth labs... the new way soccer moms get through the day.. HAHAHAHAHA
even tho this is a funny concept of a story... i am glad no one was hurt to bad... its horrible that you have to worry about someone's car exploding while you are watching your children play.

It doesn't matter if there were 5 or 500 parents and children there. The fact is those people were innocent and could have been seriously hurt. Thank God that didn't happen.
Ok let me help clear this up. This report says the car was laying on its side. I was there the car was not laying on its side. All of the windows were blown out. The explosion sounded like someone hit a car. There were probably all total 100 people in the complex at the time. Thank goodness a game had not just ended because several of the players and their familys cars were parked near the car that exploded.
You never know any more what might happen, no matter where you are.
my dad works at the hospital... he said it was an oxygen tank that blew up... someone lit a cigarette.. lol mobile meth lab
HAHAHA
The following came directly from the channel 4 news site as one of thier stories:
ANDERSON, S.C. -- Anderson police say that to men huffing compressed air in a parking lot caused an explosion when one of them lit a match.
The explosion happened in the parking lot of the Anderson Sports and Entertainment Center at about 8:45 p.m.
Police said that Brian Kelly, 19, and Todd Mellon, 34, had huffed four or five cans of compressed air. They had the windows of the car closed, so when Mellon tried to light a cigarette, the lingering chemicals exploded.
Officers said the blast shattered all of the car's windows.
Mellon has second-degree burns on his hands, face, neck and legs. Kelly has second-degree burns on his chest, neck and face, police said. They were both transported to AnMed and then airlifted to the Augusta Burn Center.
A public safety officer was taken to AnMed for observation after he inhaled some of the fumes. He was treated and released.
Firefighters also hosed down several other people in the area as a precaution.
The explosion happened as hundreds of children and parents attended soccer games at the Civic Center Complex nearby. None of them were injured.
It was not immediately clear if Kelly and Mellon would be charged in the incident.

And that is exactly what Joey Preston wants you to believe. That he has become old news and by using all these shills on here to keep repating it over and over he hopes to dull the public's interest. Don't worry though. It isn't going to work, because we will make it a point to keep reminding the public who is responsible for everything that goes on in this County. Preston tries to hug up on all the good things, many of which he has had limited input on, but tries to distance himself from the bad things. Still refuses to explain why he set himself up with a contract that does not make him answerable to anyone. He says he is answerable to County Council, but the facts have proven that he only panders to the five councilmembers from whom he has the votes in his pocket. He uses them for justification for everything he does. So be assured you will hear his name every time anything to do with the County comes up. He said he is responsible for everything. "He is THE MAN!"
GEEZE CindyRoper:
What in the world does Joey Preston have to do with this incident? Are you related to cwilson4?
The truth is there is people using drugs in almost any place you go. If you want to stay away from drugs then stay at safe places. I hate this had to happen but, they took the chance, and I hope they never do this again, and if anyone wants to take a chance just walk out cause it is everywhere. The Law really is going to have to STOP this, and I am also Talking about these Lazy Judges we have, and I'm not just talking about drugs, how about Choking, Cutting most parents would say well my children would not do that. Well I hope and pray you don't find then at the end of a belt one day, DEAD. Start Talking to them, and if they don't want to talk, chanches are, they have tried some of this. Parents Get In TOUCH with your Children. Drunks and drug users usally don't want to talk about it. Your Children are exposed to more than we ever thought about.
