I would like to comment on the Teen Forum column you had in Sunday’s edition (Aug. 24). The question addressed by the columnists was “Is Michael Phelps greatest athlete ever?”
Michael Phelps did a great thing. He broke a record that had stood for 36 years.
In the eight events that he swam in, he won eight times. You can’t say that for Muhammad Ali.
Ali was a great fighter. He was in 61 fights, he won 56 of them, 37 by knockouts, but he lost five times.
How about Rocky Marciano? He had 49 fights, 49 wins. 43 of them by knockouts. In fact, he was only knocked down twice. Even Joe Louis, who also lost to Rocky, said he was the greatest fighter of all time.
I say Rocky Marciano was the greatest athlete of all time. He has been, and probably will be, the only heavyweight fighter to retire undefeated.
