The summer movie season is halfway through, but the July 4 weekend (that has turned into July 4 week for movie releases) is probably the biggest time of the year.
And who owns July 4 like Will Smith?
The answer is: No one.
From “Independence Day” to “Men in Black,” Will Smith has dominated the summer movie scene. This year, he brings it full force by merging his everyman character with the superhero genre by bringing us “Hancock” (which opened on Tuesday). This is one movie I have been looking forward to for weeks and it might be one I watch on opening weekend.
But there are plenty of others coming out leading up to the Oscar season of films. Only a few weeks of action-packed flicks before we get the cerebral ones flowing into our overtaxed brains.
Here is what will be out from now until the end of summer and what to expect from each of them.
“Hancock” (in theaters now)
“Iron Man” was great and so was “The Incredible Hulk.” The only thing is that fans of those characters know exactly what to expect from them. Heck, “Hulk” was made into a movie just a few years ago. But “Hancock” is different. Here, we have a guy with Superman-like powers who goes through life drinking, cavorting and generally not caring what anyone thinks of him. It’s a great melding of the flawed character of Spider-Man with the ultimate power of Superman.
This one could be the best of the bunch.
“Hellboy 2” (opens July 11)
So, you like superhero movies, right? Well, Hellboy returns and adds to the genre with a new tale of grit, grime and misunderstanding. Hellboy isn’t quite in the Iron Man or Hulk vein, but his fanbase was big enough to pull a sequel in this mega-movie summer.
Sadly, I think it will get lost among all the other comic films this July.
“Journey to the Center of the Earth” (opens July 11)
I don’t like Brendan Frasier. I really don’t like his acting. I just won’t watch this film. You can if you want, but I think there are a lot of better options out there.
“The Dark Knight” (opens July 18)
OK, maybe “Hancock” will be the second best of the bunch.
“The Dark Knight” is yet another superhero story in a summer movie season riddled with the things. But it looks like this flick won’t over saturate the market as much as make us beg for more.
Christian Bale is back as Batman and now he goes toe-to-toe with The Joker. But this Joker (played by the late Heath Ledger) is different from any other incarnation of the character we have ever seen. This Joker is as crazy as in the darkest of comics and will easily be the darkest the Dark Knight has ever been.
So, this will probably be the best of the bunch.
“The X-Files: I Want to Believe” (opens July 25)
I just saw the first trailer for this second X-Files flick and I have to say it doesn’t do much for me. I was never a huge fan of the series and I only saw bits and pieces of the first film. And there just doesn’t seem to be a lot of hype over this second installment. I think they made too many mysteries out of the series and never gave fans any kind of answers — or closure. Maybe this will be what they are looking for.
“The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” (opens Aug. 1)
See “Journey to the Center of the Earth.”
There are more like “Pineapple Express” (a stoner flick) and “Space Chimps” (an animated adventure), but this should get you through for a while. After all, it’s not like movies are cheap these days. It will cost you a couple gallons of gas just to get in the theater.
