DeAndre McDaniel’s spot on the Clemson football team is safe for now.
Clemson coach Tommy Bowden issued a statement Monday which kept the sophomore safety from punishment regarding his recent arrest on assault and battery charges of a high and aggravated nature, although McDaniel’s status for the 2008 season remains unclear.
“We continue to review information concerning this case, and I want to be clear that I take these charges against DeAndre McDaniel seriously,” Bowden said.
“DeAndre remains a Clemson student, and I will allow him to be an active member of the football team at this time. We will continue to monitor the legal process as it develops. His status for our regular season competition is yet to be determined.”
McDaniel was arrested June 21 on the assault charges and a Clemson University judiciary review board did not punish him following a hearing last week, although they reserve the right to do so if further evidence emerges in the case.
The charges against McDaniel are expected to take six to 12 months to resolve in the Pickens County justice system if McDaniel requests a trial.
Clemson opens the 2008 season against Alabama Aug. 30 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

This is yet another example of winning being more important to Tommy Bowden and Clemson football. Violence against women is never acceptable on any level. I see that Tommy Bowden dose not feel this way when it comes to his players. What happened to the www.thereisnoexcuse.org/ campaign you where apart of Tommy?
The last thing that I heard was that McDaniel has not been found GUILTY yet, marcreek. Maybe Bowden is waiting for the verdict before hastily making a decision.

by the time this case goes to trial mcdaniel will probably be graduated by then, so bowden wont have to make a decision. until then mcdaniel will continue to play football.this whole case is a bunch of crap anyway.you think if it was just an ordinary person, there would be this much publicity about it.
it doesnt matter no woman deserve to be beaten by a football thug, Thats the problem if he wasnt a football player his butt would still be in jail, GO GAMECOCKS
Yes it is true that no woman or anyone else should be beaten by a football thug, but no one has proven that McDaniel is a thug or that he really did beat the woman, yet.
If the Duke University Officials hadn't panicked with the Lacrosse Team fiasco, Clemson officials may have kicked him off the team and asked questions later. I am glad they are trying to find out the truth before taking any action.
I still believe that a man or woman is innocent until proven guilty, and punishment without proof of guilt is a form of lynching.
I don't know if McDaniel would still be in jail if he wasn't a football player, but I am sure he is getting a lot of extra news coverage because he is a football player.
Tommy Bowden chose to put his name on the www.thereisnoexcuse.org/ campaign. Yet when one of his players is acused of Violence against a woman, the player is still allowed to be apart of the team. This player is expected to start this year and played in every game last year, if he was just another practice dummy would he be worth all this press? THERE IS NO EXCUSE!!!!
Well when witnesses refute what the girl alleges and she doesn't show up for the University Judicial Board hearing, you have to wonder how much of what she says is true.
Since witnesses say that the girl is lying why should he be kicked off the football team or out of school before being found guilty? If he did it then he will eventually go to jail or this is a case of a girl trying to get even with her boyfriend dumping her and he will be found not guilty. Tommy Bowden has kicked players off the team for poor grades and bad behavior, he runs a clean program even though he underachieves with the talent he has.
So far from what I have read on this incident, Tommy Bowden is doing the right thing. You don't ruin a kids life before knowing whether or not the girl is lying or not. If you think differently than you are part of the problem in this country.
