Many Georgians have cast their votes already

STORY TOOLS

Georgia voters will head to their local precincts today for primary elections, but thousands have already made their candidate selections through absentee ballots and early electronic voting. Absentee ballots must have been received by Monday to count.

In Hart County, election officials reported Monday that 398 Democrats and 233 Republicans had already voted via absentee ballots and early electronic voting. Janet McCart, elections coordinator for the county, predicts a 27 percent to 30 percent turnout of registered voters today.

In Stephens County, 2,085 people had voted via absentee ballot and early electronic voting, according to elections superintendent, Therese Kelley. She is predicting a 65 percent turnout of the 15,300 registered voters today.

Election officials in Franklin County report that as of Monday, 398 of 11,933 registered voters had already cast their votes. In Habersham County, 1,929 individuals had voted.

In Elbert County, more than 800 Democrats and nearly 200 Republicans had cast their votes as of Monday, according to Mae Davis, chief registrar for the county.

“I was hoping for a good turnout, more than 50 percent, but I’m not sure it’s going to be that high. We’ve had a fairly good turnout, but not as high as I expected,” she said. Elbert County has 10,228 registered voters.

Citizens in their respective counties will vote for candidates in local and statewide races. Primary winners will appear on the general election ballot on Nov. 4.

Residents in Elbert and Hart counties will vote on proposals relating to zoning plans and tax increases, respectively. Franklin County Democratic voters will decide if they agree with a proposal to consolidate some voting precincts.

Voting will begin at 7 a.m. and will end at 7 p.m. at assigned polling locations. Voters are required to bring picture identification in the form of a Georgia drivers license, state ID, valid passport, government employee photo ID, US military ID with photo, or Tribal ID.
