FRANKLIN COUNTY This story has been corrected from its original version.
Incumbent Franklin County Stevie Thomas won a primary battle Tuesday against his Democratic Party challengers Lee Brawner and Tom Kelley.
Thomas faced no Republican opposition. He received 1,490 votes compared with 498 for Kelly and 36 for Brawner, according to unofficial results.
Three Franklin County Commission seats were up for grabs as well Tuesday.
In District 1, which covers Carnesville and Canon, incumbent Democrat Robert Franklin and Republican challenger Angela J. McGuire Whidby will face each other in November.
Whidby received 733 votes and Franklin 1,586 votes on Tuesday.
In the commission District 2 race, incumbent A. Wayne Grizzle chose not to run for re-election to the District 2 commission seat, but under Franklin County law a person may serve as a commissioner and county probate judge, Grizzle said.
District Two encompasses the city of Lavonia. Two Democrats and one Republican were vying for that post.
On the Democratic ticket, David R. Strickland defeated Paul Withers Tuesday by a vote of 1,195 to 704. The winner will face Republican Charles Cawthon in November.
Grizzle said he only planned to serve one term on the Franklin County Board of Commissioners and fully intends to serve out the commission term, which officially ends Dec. 31.
Two Democrats and two Republicans are vying for the Franklin County Commission chair seat.
Hugh Roach defeated J. Norman Gladish on the Democratic ticket by a vote of 1,370 to 575 on Tuesday in that contest.
Incumbent Samuel Elrod defeated Owen P. Roberts on the Republican side 564 to 329.
Democratic Party voters also had a party question to answer.
The Franklin County Democratic Party wanted to know if voters agreed with a proposal by Franklin County Manager Frank Ginn to consolidate some voting precincts.
Voters disagreed with the proposal by a vote of 1,660 to 314.
Ginn maintains those precincts where voter turnout is traditionally low could be combined with other precincts as a cost-saving measure.
However, Franklin County Democratic Party chairman Tom MacDonald contends the County doesn’t spend that much on elections anyway and any savings would be minimal. He also said eliminating some precincts would make it difficult for those in those more rural areas to get to the polls.
