Let's Do Lunch: Bill's Restaurant

All too often, we don’t go somewhere new or different because we don’t know what to expect. That is where this new feature, “Let’s Do Lunch,” comes in. Each week, we will highlight a different spot for lunch that you can try. We will tell you about prices, atmosphere and anything else you need to know before showing up and chowing down.

And if you have a place we should go, don’t hesitate to drop a line. It’s always lunchtime around here.

For a little something outside the standard sandwich and wrap realm that we find ourselves in around lunchtime each day, why not get into some of the Southern roots that makes living in this neck of the woods unique.

Bill’s Restaurant is one of the longest running “meat-and-three” eateries in Anderson and has been going for the last 20-plus years. The entire time, Bill has adhered to the simple ideals of owning a restaurant by giving people fresh food each day for a reasonable price. And he gives them what they want.

In the case of lunch, that usually means fried and baked chicken as a daily meat option as well as one other entrée possibility. Then they carry corn, beans, mashed potatoes, beets, mac and cheese and a wide array of “veggies” to choose from along their cafeteria-style line.

Walk into Bill’s and grab a tray. Choose your meat and one, two or three veggies or just get four veggies if you’re not in the mood for a main meat. In a matter of seconds (seriously) you are at the end of the line picking up your cupcake for dessert and pouring sweet tea from the urn on the counter. Pay (with cash or check only) and it’s down to a booth or table.

Rather than getting chicken, it was meatloaf for this reporter. That, along with corn and mac and cheese, made for a filling, comforting lunch. And more often than not, the fellow who made the food all morning long, owner, Bill, will come by for a chat to see how things are going in your world.

Just be wary of how much you eat as you might need a nap afterward. And don’t forget to tip the great servers they have there filling up tea glasses and bringing your everything from capers to ketchup.
