Superheroes dominate the summer movie blockbuster

A couple weeks ago, we wrote about the upcoming summer movies where superheroes were concerned. But we left a ton out. Not only about the movies, but about the continued trend of making films based on comic heroes we all grew up with.

The trend is clear and it doesn’t seem to be dying out. Already, plans are in motion for a Captain American film, an Avengers flick, a fourth Spider-Man movie (with or without Tobey Maguire), another Superman adventure is in the works and even Wolverine will be featured all on his lonesome.

This got us to thinking, what do fanboys look forward to when it comes to comic movies. Who do they want to see in the coming years and, if this popularity keeps the present pace, what do they think will be great on the big screen?

“I would love to see a ‘Secret Wars’ movie,” said Roger Case, a 29-year-old comic fan who counts that Marvel saga among is favorites. “Seeing Spider-Man team up with Marvel heroes against a ton of Marvel villains. That would be something else.”

Carl Harris, 34, of Anderson thought that would be cool, but figures it will never happen. When he thinks of comic films, he said it has to be a single hero and tell a story from their point of view alone.

His choice: Green Lantern.

“Here’s a hero that is only limited by his bravery and his imagination,” Harris said. “Just think what they could do with that.”

Characters like Batman, Superman, Spider-Man and the X-Men are obvious to most fanboys. Unfortunately, flicks like “Daredevil” and “Fantastic Four” haven’t exactly panned out.

Mark Francis thinks the studios have jumped into the comic film franchise too quickly in some cases and not really flushed out the character in question.

“Look at ‘The Dark Knight,’” he said. “They are finally getting to the nitty-gritty of the Batman character and it could contend for an Oscar. They need to put that same attention into all of them.”

And they all agree that a movie can come out later than expected, just so long as it’s good.

“‘The Incredible Hulk’ proved that, didn’t it?” Harris said.

Seth Rogan is starring and writing The Green Hornet movie. Love Seth's comedy, but I'm a little worried he's going to camp it up. He says he's making it a straight action/buddy flick, but I'm skeptical.
BTW, went to the midnight showing of TDK. Absolutely awesome - the best comic book film ever and one that could get Oscar consideration not just for Heath Ledger's amazing performance, but also Best Picture, Best Director and I'm sure a couple of technical categories.
