What they’re known for: Milliken has accumulated more than 2,000 patents. Developments include fabrics to keep soldiers warm, astronauts safe and major league baseball players comfortable. Other woven and knitted fabrics are found in automobiles, sailboats, tennis balls and kayaks.

How they got started: Milliken got its start in 1865 when Seth Milliken and William Deering founded Deering Milliken Company, a small woolen fabrics company in Portland, Maine. Deering eventually left to start his own company. After a move to New York City, Milliken invested in a new facility in Pacolet, S.C. in 1884. From there, the manufacturing operations grew.

Number of employees: approximately 10,000 worldwide and 996 in Anderson County

Where you can find them: Milliken has plants across the Upstate. Its headquarters is located at 920 Milliken Rd. in Spartanburg.
