ANDERSON COUNTY Tyler Erwin was listed in serious condition at Greenville Hospital System’s Children’s Hospital as of Tuesday afternoon after being hit by a car Sunday, according to a hospital spokesperson.
South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Kathy Hiles said the 8-year-old was injured around 4:35 p.m. Sunday on Berry Lane in Homeland Park in Anderson when a motorist ran off the road and hit the youth.
The 16-year-old driver of a 1996 Jeep sports utility vehicle ran off the right side of Berry Lane, overcorrected and ran off the left side of the road, hitting the child who was in the grass with his bicycle, Hiles said. Highway Patrol officials declined to release the name of the teen.
Justin Brown, who lives on Berry Lane next door to the 8-year-old, said the Jeep was going too fast when it rounded a curve, slid in sand and fishtailed across the road.
The Jeep crossed a ditch, hit the boy and continued about 100 feet before hitting another ditch and losing its passenger wheel, he said.
“That vehicle was so out of control,” Brown said.
Ervin was taken to AnMed Health Medical Center in Anderson and then by helicopter to Greenville Hospital System, Hiles said.
Charges against the 16-year-old driver have not been filed as the case is still pending, Hiles said.

I totally agree with you Santo. I would put money on it that a cell phone was involved. This family so did not need this to happen what with all the other things going on in their lives. Not only was the little boy physically injured but his little step-brothers who witnessed it were also traumatized. Now the big question is: "How does that Mother divide herself between a daughter undergoing medical treatment in one city and a son in critical care in another?" It amazes me how some kids just get behind the wheel and they think just because they passed the test to drive they have the common sense to.
I have teenagers I know. I am sad for the 16 year old boy though, I am sure he has realized how his inexperience has almost cost someone their life.
