STORY TOOLS

— A man was arrested after a standoff in Anderson County that ended peacefully Tuesday night, according to authorities.

Authorities were notified Tuesday night that a man who was in a wooded area near River Road and S.C. 86 was threatening to harm himself, according to reports from news organizations and Susann Griffin, spokeswoman for the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office.

A negotiator was called to the scene, and the situation was resolved around 8 Tuesday night, Griffin said.

Jeffery Doyle Gilliland, 37, was charged, Griffin said. He was charged with pointing and presenting a firearm and unlawful possession of a weapon after at one point during negotiations he pointed a firearm at a sheriff’s deputy, Griffin said.

The standoff lasted for roughly an hour, according to reports from news organizations.

That man is extremely lucky he was not shot. An officer hesitating for a split second in a situation like that could get him killed. Fortunately it worked out.
