For the last 30 years, the Bele Chere Festival in Asheville has grown into one of the largest music and arts festivals in the region. Acts like Blues Traveler, Rusted Root and Richie Havens have graced the stages throughout downtown Asheville each summer and its 30th anniversary is no different.
Above all, said Melissa Porter, festival coordinator, Bele Chere is about community camaraderie. It’s about friends and family, locals and tourists coming together to enjoy some fun in the summer.
“This festival has really grown into a big music festival with great arts and crafts and great food,” Porter said. “We are free, we want to focus on everything from children’s activities to a wide diversity in entertainment. We are all things to all people.”
Dozens of bands will play Friday through Sunday along the downtown streets of Asheville. In addition, 120 artisans will sell their wares alongside 60 local shops. And there will be two food courts: one featuring classic festival food from corn dogs to funnel cakes and another showcasing 12 to 15 area restaurants and the unique fare they provide.
Porter said that their research shows that tourists and locals alike want to experience Asheville at a festival like Bele Chere. So they have focused in the past decade or so on giving them as much of the city as possible.
And with it being a free festival, that is something unprecedented for something this large.
“People wanted more national music acts, so we introduced the ticketed shows about four years ago,” Porter said. “I think it has really worked out well. We are not a jam band show or a country show or a rock show, but no matter what music you like, there will be a band for you.”
Bele Chere will take place this Friday, Saturday and Sunday in downtown Asheville. For more information on parking, a layout of the festival and a full schedule of events, go online to www.belecherefestival.com.
