Drinking: A wheaty surprise

Since starting this little beer column, it’s evident that, for the most part, I like beers. In fact, there are very few beers I don’t like.

But if I don’t like a certain type of brew, I tend to simply avoid it like the plague so my taste buds aren’t offended in any way, shape or form. After all, I only have a few thousand of the suckers, and each one is very, very special to me.

Overall, I stay away from wheat ales wherever possible. I also am not a fan of any flavored beer that involves raspberry, oatmeal, citrus or chocolate. If I want to taste those flavors, I would have a berry or a bowl of oatmeal or an orange or some chocolate. When I have beer, I want to taste, well, beer.

So last weekend when I went to Asheville, it was the perfect opportunity for me to try something, write about it and go about my merry way. Instead, I did something I swore I would never do: I had a wheat beer.

The Cattail Peak Wheat is the new seasonal brew from Highland Brewing Co. in Asheville, and it is good. I hate most wheat ales. I hate most Hefiweisen varieties. But I really liked this Cattail Peak Wheat.

It was crisp, it was refreshing and it didn’t have that citrusy aftertaste I associate with most wheat beers. It wasn’t some fru-fru ale that makes you think you are drinking wine. It was light, but still packed a quality “beer taste.”

For those who fear the wheat beer, give this Highland brew a try. But that doesn’t mean I’ll be enjoying one of their Oatmeal Porters anytime soon.

Sadly, for the first time, I am going to write about a beer I didn’t really like all that much. It’s not that this is a terrible beer, but it’s not something I will be drinking again any time soon.

New Grist Beer is a gluten-free brew made from rice extract and Sorghum. It’s perfect for anyone who can’t process gluten in any form or those who need gluten-free beers. But if you can have gluten, get a gluten-filled beer.

This beer is oddly sour, oddly dense and leaves a strange aftertaste. I tried this beer a few months ago and it wasn’t bad, but when I went for it again, it was just odd.

Made by Lakefront Brewery, it is a specialized beer for specialized tastes. But I think the next one I have of theirs will be something with a stronger reputation.

seems AIM hires drunks as reporters,I quit drinkin' for about ten years but now drinkin' lil bit,ain't officially started back jus' practising in case I do.Maybe they'll hire me as an apprentice.

Why do you say this reporter is a drunk just because he writes about beer? Seems obvious to me he appreciates the quality and distinctive taste of various beers and is not into mass consumption of just anything available like most alcoholics. Incidentally I don't drink but I was just wondering?
