ANDERSON Anderson police report a steady demand from thieves who target parked vehicles in their search for catalytic converters.
Five vehicles have been vandalized in the city in about a week as brazen thieves crawl under trucks and automobiles and remove the pollution devices while the vehicles are parked in public places.
About 1:45 a.m. Monday on North Murray Avenue, thieves targeted a 1995 Mazda pickup at Westside Tire Service. A surveillance camera recorded two men in a Ford Focus that parked next to the Mazda, and one man removed the converter from the Mazda, according to the incident report.
Two more catalytic converters were taken from parked trucks outside a local movie theater, making the city's fifth such theft since July 17 and the county's 11th in less than a month.
Saturday, thieves worked the parking lot at the AmStar Theaters on Civic Center Boulevard, removing converters from two trucks.
