DENVER If at first you don’t read, I will write, write again. …
Readers ask questions that I’m happy to answer, and I try to be polite when I tell them that I answered that question in a recent column. It’s humbling to know that my column is not universally popular, but I’ll get over that.
What makes me think I can rewrite something and expect different results? Well, I’m a mile high in Colorado for an editors’ conference. I’ll blame it on the thin air.
Just the FAQs, man (and ma’am), as in Frequently Asked Questions. …
Why? We told you we were going green when we changed from a broadsheet format to this Handy, Dandy Andy on April 22, and it’s true. But we can’t deny the eco-nomic factors. As I noted in an April 20 column, these are challenging times. Before we decided to change our format, we discussed eliminating one or more editions per week, laying off as many as 33 people or raising the cost of subscriptions. None of these alternatives was good. The new format allows us to conserve money by conserving newsprint.
Where are the sections?Sports is a “pullout” section every day. It is section “B,” inside the “A” section. “Be” is an extra section in Thursday’s paper. Views and Business are an extra section in Sunday’s paper, and Vibe and classified advertising are a “pullout” inside that section. HomeTowner is an extra section in Wednesday’s paper.
Where’s HomeTowner? We made it hard to find the first few weeks. Today it should be easier, as HomeTowner news begins on the first page of this section. What once was a page in the newspaper each Monday through Friday, HomeTowner now is published weekly, as it originally was, although some community news is sprinkled through the paper on other days.
Did we shrink the type? No! Body copy is the same size as it was in the previous format, with the exception of Straight Talk (a microscopic change). The small (agate) type elsewhere is no smaller than it used to be, even for our stock listings. The leading (space between lines) is reduced slightly so we can publish as many stocks as possible. If we restore the leading, we would reduce the number of stocks that are listed. Could you live with that?
Where’s Doonesbury? The creator is taking an extended leave. Some newspapers are running Doonesbury reruns. We have added a new comic, “Argyle Sweater.” Fresh Doonesbury strips will return on June 17. We’re surveying readers so we can decide which strip to drop to make room for Doonesbury. (Mallard Fillmore fans want us to drop Doonesbury!) Survey responses have been pouring in. Keep them coming.
Where’s the weather? I told readers that it would be inside the back page every day. I fibbed. When we publish a 48-page newspaper, we lose color on the page that faces the inside back page. This is the main comics page. We could print those comics in black and white, but if we move this page and the weather page, we get color. Is this a problem?
Any other questions? Bring them on.

I like your new format. I think it's easier to read especially at the restaurant table.
