A special Friday the 13th list of football questions to help us get to dog day workouts. Who will be the best quarterback in the area, Walhalla’s Rob Middleton or Daniel’s Justin Walker? Middleton plays in a more stat-friendly system, but Walker has more athletes at his disposal. Will the South Carolina offensive line play well enough to give Tommy Beecher or Chris Smelley enough time to make plays? The linemen gave up 31 sacks in 12 games, but all but one return, so you figure things can’t get much worse. With a 21-16 record in three years, and only a Liberty Bowl win as a high water mark, if Steve Spurrier’s program doesn’t drastically improve, how long before he’s on a Tommy Bowden-like hot seat? It would take a second straight bowl-less season for any serious rustling to start around Williams-Brice. Speaking of Bowden, the preseason accolades are already pouring in. How many times will his highly ranked recruits disappoint their fan base in high-profile games? Against Alabama, at Boston College, or against South Carolina? And will any of those games be impacted by another special teams implosion by the Tigers? Most fans need to see it before they believe it, but until Bowden employs a special teams coordinator, many fans won’t rest easy. Will freshman wide receivers Tavarres King and A.J. Green be the kind of players Georgia fans hoped to get when Mohamed Massaquoi arrived in Athens four years ago? Now that Martavis Bryant is officially at T.L. Hanna, who will get him and Quinton Payton the ball through the air? Incumbent Dajun Martin has the most experience, albeit limited, but there are at least two others vying for the job. Do any local players have a better chance of making the Shrine Bowl roster since Westside coach Ted Luckadoo is the head coach? Probably not, although Payton and Daniel’s Jerodd Williams have the best chance no matter who is the coach. Will Belton-Honea Path coach Wayne Green stick with senior quarterback Matthew Moore, or try someone like junior Jacob Tavernier under center? Moore struggled near the end of last season, (43 percent completion percentage) but Tavernier would be the first two-way QB since O’Bryan Clinkscales in ’04. Speaking of the Bears, will they be motivated by their first non-region championship season in six years to bring the Western 3A trophy back to the navy and red? Barring major injury, my money’s still on Daniel to repeat. After Abbeville's won the last two region titles, can Pendleton get back on top? Only if they have more than one playmaker, because B.J. Blanding wasn’t enough to beat the Panthers last season. Will any team knock Greenwood off its rather sturdy perch atop Region 1-4A? Doubtful. While Hanna and Westside have a few talented players, neither features its best team this decade, and Laurens needs to put together a solid campaign under Greg Lawson before it’s considered a serious threat.
