ANDERSON COUNTY Anderson County Democrats elected officials Thursday to go to the South Carolina convention and passed a resolution for the elimination of payday lending.
After action at the county library in downtown Anderson Thursday at the annual convention for the Anderson County Democratic Party, 55 delegates will be heading to Columbia in May for the state Democratic convention, said Stuart Sprague, county party chairman. After that, selected delegates will attend the national convention.
The state sends 54 delegates to the national event, including eight super delegates. Four of those come from Congressional District 3, which includes Anderson County, Mr. Sprague said.
“Some of our members are wanting to run for those positions,” he said.
Anderson Democrats also passed a resolution Thursday indicating their desire to see payday lending eliminated from South Carolina. The resolution also encourages banks to make loans affordable for lower-income people.
Party members also passed a resolution honoring Frances Symons, the party’s longtime treasurer and supporter, naming her treasurer emeritus in honor of her years of service to the party, Mr. Sprague said. Ms. Symons has had to step down from her position because of illness.
Anderson County Council member Gracie Floyd, who also is first vice president of the county Democratic Party, said she was pleased with the number of people at the event Thursday.
“We had a really good crowd tonight, people actively taking part in the convention,” she said.
This year’s political season has been exciting so far in terms of the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, and the excitement is continuing, Ms. Floyd said.
