Common name: American Elderberry

Scientific name: Sambucus canadensis

Plant family: Honeysuckle (Caprifoliaceae)

Light: Full sun

Soil: Moist, but drought-tolerant

Native range: Eastern United States

Description: Deciduous, multi-stemmed shrub with upright, rounded form, 8 to 12 feet tall

Flowers: Flattened heads of white flowers in midsummer

Landscape use: Attractive gray bark in winter and yellow, red or orange fall color

Comments: Often forms thickets, with fast growth rate; easy to shape by pruning

Wildlife value: Flowers visited by bees and butterflies; black or purple berries are excellent food source for birds and other wildlife
