Younger sibling of Oconee council member charged after assault on council member

— A Westminster man has been arrested in connection with an assault brother, who is an Oconee County Council member.

Council member Hugh Frank Ables Jr. said Tuesday that he is working to have the charges dropped.

Oconee County sheriff’s deputies arrested Carl Ables, 44, of 780 Worley Road on May 8 for assault and battery with intent to kill Frank Ables, 49, of 368 Smith Dairy Road, according to information from the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office and the Oconee County Detention Center.

A detention spokeswoman said Tuesday that Carl Ables remained in custody as of Tuesday evening in lieu of a $25,000 property bond.

According to a police report, Carl Ables attacked Frank Ables with a pitchfork around 2:30 a.m. on May 8.

Frank Ables told deputies that he was investigating a burglar alarm at his chicken houses at 105 Olbin Road when he encountered Carl Ables in the driveway, according to the deputy’s report.

Initiated by Carl Ables, an argument erupted over a check, according to the report.

A responding deputy followed Carl Ables to his home and saw him run inside before seeing him emerge, “sticking up his middle fingers,” according to the report.
