Meadors announces education advisory group

STORY TOOLS

— Democratic state Senate District 3 candidate Dr. Marshall Meadors said Wednesday that he has formed an Educators Advisory Committee to help him develop his education platform.

The group of mostly retired educators also have been staffing phone banks to contact educators and seek their support for Meadors.

Meadors, a family physician, is running against incumbent Republican Kevin Bryant, an Anderson pharmacist. Meadors announced the committee during a press conference at the Anderson County Museum.

Bill Dillard, a former Anderson School District 3 superintendent who retired in 2001, said he joined Meadors’ new committee because of his strong support for public education. Dillard said the Anderson school districts support education where “teachers can teach and students can learn,” and Meadors’ understands that issue.

Bryant has backed school vouchers and tax credits to allow parents who don’t want their children in the public system to use tax dollars to support their choice of education programs. Meadors said he is strongly opposed to vouchers or credits.

“Draining precious dollars from the system for vouchers or tax credits for parents who choose to home school or send their children to private schools just makes no sense,” he said.

Bryant has said tax dollars should be used as taxpayers see fit.

Meadors, who graduated from T.L. Hanna High School in Anderson and later attended Wofford College and the Medical University of South Carolina, said he values public education because of his background. His mother, he said, was an educator, and he is a product of public education.

“We believe that providing our children with the highest-quality public education is the No. 1 priority of our state government,” Meadors said. “When we set priorities for our state budget, we believe we must establish an adequate and stable source of funds for our public schools.”

If elected, Meadors said the advisory group would continue to advise him regarding education issues.

After reading the lead story about lack of paper in the Anderson schools somebody needs to do something to help the people of South Carolina. Good luck in your campaign Dr Meadors and after you win perhaps you could downsize the administration department to cover the cost of providing progress reports.

Meadors is in favor of the same failed education system that favors the educrats and fails the student.

I am sure his "advisory" committee is full of those who have been a conduit for higher taxes, more spending and less education.

This is a joke

Is his Advisory committee for reform or just for more $ to be thrown at the probelm? I recently attended a local PTA meeting. The principal asked those in attendance to "seriously" consider who we want in Columbia when casting our vote in November. She was not happy with who was currently there. She said we need a "Friend" in Columbia who would look out for our children...(five them more $). The principal all but endorsed Meadors. I thought it odd that she was campaigning. They all just want more, more, more....$ and more of the same old failing policies that are in place. We need to CHANGE the way we approach education. Keep up the good work Senator Bryant. School Choice is the answer.

Hopefully someone can advise him on how to get the public education system to get better than a below average on an improvement rating. With $8,300 being spent per pupil in the 2007 school year, the state could save thousands by offering the private school vouchers. I can, and do send my child to a private school for a much better education for a fraction of that price.
