It’s been more than two decades since Belton decided to honor one of their most impressive landmarks with a citywide festival. As the festival takes to its 22nd year on Saturday, the Belton Standpipe Festival has changed its name, it’s look and a few of the events to call attention to all that the community has to offer.

“Really, it’s not that we are changing anything as much as adding to something that is already successful,” said Allison Darby, volunteer and publicity coordinator for the Standpipe Festival.

Now called the Standpipe Heritage and Arts Festival, this one-day event from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. in downtown Belton features classic cars, arts and crafts, art demos, athletic tournaments and competitions, tours, exhibits, food, drink and much, much, much more. Darby said it’s the perfect event for offering a little bit of everything for just about any taste.

For instance, the Smithsonian exhibit “Key Ingredients: America by Food” continues at the Belton Arts Center and what organizers hope will be the world’s largest Cake Walk will take place in honor of that. At the same time, the 10th annual BCA Juried Art Show Exhibition and children’s arts activities will take place while skateboarding competitions and a tennis tournament go on throughout the day.

A new event is the Belton Antiques Road Show with antiques appraiser, Terry Ferrell, telling people what their heirlooms might be worth while the popular Open Car Show goes on around the downtown square.

And admission is free.

“It’s just an opportunity for people to enjoy some free entertainment, interesting history, great sports and not spend an arm and a leg for it,” Darby said. “You don’t have to go anywhere when you can get it all in Belton.”
