Geer hearing postponed

STORY TOOLS

— A preliminary hearing for Floyd Geer, accused of murdering a Pendleton man, has been continued, the 10th Circuit Solicitor’s office said Thursday.

The delay is caused by a scheduling conflict, said Rosemary Littleton, spokesperson for the solicitor’s office.

The hearing would have allowed a magistrate to determine whether or not there was enough evidence for Geer’s arrest, she said.

Geer, of 107 Amanda Dr., Central is charged with murder and possession of a firearm in the commission of a violent crime in connection with the shooting death of 41-year-old Evens Guillaume on Aug. 11.

Guillaume was found when residents of 136 La Paz St. in Pendleton returned home around 4:50 p.m. to find his body in their front yard. Guillaume had been killed by a gunshot to the chest that pierced his heart’s aorta, Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore said.

Geer, 26, was arrested the following day by Anderson County Sheriff’s Office deputies.

During a Sept. 17 hearing, Geers’ attorney claimed the shooting was in self-defense.

According to Druanne White, Geer’s attorney, Geer acted to protect himself when Guillaume reached into the car Geer was sitting in and tried to choke and rob Geer. White also said there were witnesses who would testify that Guillaume had asked someone for a gun to shoot Geer with and had talked about robbing Geer.

Prosecutors say the evidence, that is now with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, will show it was not in self defense.

A new preliminary hearing date has not yet been set, Littleton said.
