It’s been said that you never get a second chance to make a good first impression, but that’s not true — not when it comes to the Anderson Country Club.

This Friday the ACC golf course, which dates back to 1915, will reopen with new greens, new grass and a new look, all designed to make a good impression on area golfers.

“We’re real excited about it,” said Coby Gambrell, director of golf at ACC. “We started fast on our work in July and shut the course down completely, and now we’re ready to show it off.”

Gambrell says the greens will be top quality and the grass is a hybrid Bermuda.

“During the last five or six years a lot of courses have gone to the Bermuda hybrid,” he said. “And with these greens, we’re confident that golfers will find they’ll be as good as any they’ve putted on.”

The club changed ownership Jan. 1, 2008, when Joey Herbert and Clint Wright took charge. Their main goal was to offer improvements that would entice more golfers to come out and take advantage of a quality venue.

“When we leased it the first thing we wanted to do was upgrade it,” Herbert said. “We wanted more modern greens and our company’s philosophy is that the number one product is greens, so we wanted to upgrade those. I think golfers are really going to enjoy it.”

Other changes include the renovation of all course bunkers, and the addition of a new practice tee, short-game practice area, pro shop, after-round lounge area and EZGO golf carts.

The course is now run by All About Golf Organization (AAG).

Sept. 5-7 will be a member and guest only weekend. Friday will feature a dogfight and skins game for anyone interested in participating, and Saturday morning and afternoon refreshments will be provided.

Sept. 12-14 is open to the public play, and anyone who pays a regular greens fee will receive a free greens fee the next time they play at ACC.

Several different styles of membership are available.

“I think everyone will see a big difference,” Herbert said. “Our main goal is to give Anderson golfers a great place to play and a place where they can really enjoy themselves, and I think these improvements are really going to help.”
