Staton Facts celebrates a one-year anniversary with political satire and old reliables

STORY TOOLS

Holy crap! It’s the first anniversary of StatonFacts. I’ve been letting you all know about the best and brightest in the world of Internet videos for 52 weeks now. With that in mind, I thought I’d hit up the most consistently hilarious sources of online humor in this very special column.

When I’m having trouble stating the facts, these are my MVPs.

There is not a single Web site online that is providing as many quality parodies on our current presidential campaign as theonion.com. The latest video from the Onion is one of the funniest the site has ever produced. It not only pokes fun at politicians but fickle voters.

The video documents the fictional Independent candidate Joad Cressbeckler from the Black Hills. Cressbeckler’s only involvement with politics thus far has been as a sheriff for the Diablo River Mining Settlement.

Potential voters in the video are drawn to him because he is more irascible than John McCain, and as one interviewee states, Cressbeckler seems like the candidate most likely to “drown a bag of cats.” This Internet clip is truly multi-layered; it’s not often that you find yourself replaying a two minute internet clip just to catch things you missed.

The on-screen graphics comparing Cressbeckler and McCain are funny as well. According to the charts, Cressbeckler’s health care plan involves a flask of whisky and a needle and thread for everyone, while “use foreigners” sums up his energy policy.

The video scares me in a way. If this guy actually ran for office, I may be too tempted to vote for him, despite his clear insistence on nuking China as soon as he gets the chance. With campaign slogans like “You can’t put a bucket over a pig’s head, it’ll just make him skittish,” how could you not vote for Cressbeckler?

Next we have the always-reliable funnyordie.com, where celebrities, wannabe celebrities and no name comedians all get their chance to shine. A recent addition to the Will Ferrell/Adam McKay/Judd Apatow cult is veteran character actor Richard Jenkins.

Jenkins is one of those actors that everyone knows and no one knows. I’m most familiar with him as the dad from “Six Feet Under.” Apparently, his recent part in “Step Brothers” with Will Ferrell got him on funnyordie.com, so Jenkins decided to share the memoirs of his career online.

The best of these memoirs is Jenkin’s story of being a method actor and attaining an online law degree from the University of Phoenix for his role as a lawyer in “Intolerable Cruelty” with George Clooney. Jenkins recalls visiting Clooney’s whisky-soaked trailer on the set and having Clooney verbally berate him for not being a good actor.

Apparently Hollywood is having a hard time coming up with original ideas. They need to talk to Richard Jenkins and make a movie of his embellished life. That would be the funniest movie of the year by a long shot.
