Jake Grove predicts the Emmys

STORY TOOLS

Film nuts like Michael Staton have the Oscars. TV geeks like me have the Emmys. One isn’t necessarily better than the other, just different.

Since we did the Oscar predictions a few months ago for Michael, it was fitting that we should come together for the boob tube predictions. Here are our guesses on what will happen at the Emmys this Sunday at 8 p.m. on ABC.

COMEDY

Comedy series

“Curb Your Enthusiasm”

“Entourage”

“The Office”

“30 Rock”

“Two and a Half Men”

This is a nice one to start with. Cable certainly gained some ground in nominations this year, but I fully expect the networks to dominate in this category. I still don’t know how “Two and a Half Men” keeps getting a nom, but it won’t matter. “The Office” is still the best comedy on television.

Should win: The Office

Will win: The Office

Actor In A Comedy Series

Alec Baldwin, “30 Rock”

Steve Carell, “The Office”

Lee Pace, “Pushing Daisies”

Tony Shalhoub, “Monk”

Charlie Sheen, “Two and a Half Men”

With “The Office” love going around, one would think that Steve Carell would win easily. Not so my friends. I love Tony Shalhoub in “Monk” and even enjoy “Pushing Daisies.” But I think the lead actor in a comedy will go to the guy who is the funniest. And that is…

Should win: Alec Baldwin

Will win: Alec Baldwin

Actress In A Comedy Series

Christina Applegate, “Samantha Who?”

America Ferrera, “Ugly Betty”

Tina Fey, “30 Rock”

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, “The New Adventures of Old Christine”

Mary-Louise Parker, “Weeds”

I have only seen one episode of “The New Adventures of Old Christine” and I don’t get the appeal. I have seen two episodes of “Weeds” and I get it. I love Mary-Louise Parker and I love her character. Sadly, I don’t see her getting the trophy on a pay cable series. But she should.

Should win: Mary-Louise Parker

Will win: Tina Fey

Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series

Jon Cryer, “Two and a Half Men”

Kevin Dillon, “Entourage”

Neil Patrick Harris, “How I Met Your Mother”

Jeremy Piven, “Entourage”

Rainn Wilson, “The Office”

This category is where the real competition is. Again with a “Two and a Half Men” reference, but I will stay away from that. I think “Entourage” is funny, but last season was a disappointment. No, this comes down to Doogie versus the nut. And the winner shall be…

Should win: Neil Patrick Harris

Will win: Rainn Wilson

Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series

Kristin Chenoweth, “Pushing Daisies”

Amy Poehler, “Saturday Night Live”

Jean Smart, “Samantha Who?”

Holland Taylor, “Two and a Half Men”

Vanessa Williams, “Ugly Betty”

Honestly, I couldn’t care less about this one. I am opposed to someone from a sketch comedy series getting a nomination. I don’t know why, but I am. Amy Poehler is ruining my Emmys.

Should win: Kristen Chenoweth

Will win: Kristen Chenoweth

DRAMA

Drama Series

“Boston Legal”

“Damages”

“Dexter”

“House”

“Lost”

“Mad Men”

I’m impressed that “Lost” got a nomination at all. After all, this series requires a lot of time and effort to enjoy. I think “Boston Legal” is overrated and the creators must have some kind of dirt on the entire nominating board. That series is the “Two and a Half Men” of drama. Anyway, I love “Dexter” and “House” so it was hard to choose between them. So I didn’t.

Should win: Dexter

Will win: House

Actor In A Drama Series

Gabriel Byrne, “In Treatment”

Bryan Cranston, “Breaking Bad”

Michael C. Hall, “Dexter”

Jon Hamm, “Mad Men”

Hugh Laurie, “House”

James Spader, “Boston Legal”

To me, this isn’t even a contest. Maybe with Hugh Laurie, but even that’s not close.

Should win: Michael C. Hall

Will win: Michael C. Hall

Actress In A Drama Series

Glenn Close, “Damages”

Sally Field, “Brothers & Sisters”

Mariska Hargitay, “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”

Holly Hunter, “Saving Grace”

Kyra Sedgwick, “The Closer”

One day they are just going to start nominating the TNT series and the FX series in this category and have done with it. I am tired of seeing Mariska Hargitay get a nomination for her annoying character and I just can’t say Holly Hunter is good in her role on “Saving Grace.” I’m going a different direction.

Should win: Glenn Close

Will win: Kyra Sedgwick

Supporting Actor In A Drama Series

Ted Danson, “Damages”

Michael Emerson, “Lost”

Zeljko Ivanek, “Damages”

William Shatner, “Boston Legal”

John Slattery, “Mad Men”

It’s just funny to see Ted Danson up in the acting arena again. I don’t know why, but he gives me the heebie-jeebies. Again, I hate “Boston Legal” and I just don’t think “Damages” has enough leverage to win something. So, that leaves…

Should win: Michael Emerson

Will win: John Slattery

Supporting Actress In A Drama Series

Candice Bergen, “Boston Legal”

Rachel Griffiths, “Brothers & Sisters”

Sandra Oh, “Grey’s Anatomy”

Dianne Wiest, “In Treatment”

Chandra Wilson, “Grey’s Anatomy”

I am not going to go with anything on “Grey’s Anatomy.” It’s a self-serving, pompous bit of television and I won’t have anything to do with it. However, I will say that Chandra Wilson is awesome in it. I am going with an old reliable.

Should win: Candice Bergen

Will win: Candice Bergen

REALITY

Reality Competition Program

“The Amazing Race”

“American Idol”

“Dancing With The Stars”

“Project Runway”

“Top Chef”

I have only watched one of these five programs. I will go with that one.

Should win: Top Chef

Will win: Top Chef

Host For A Reality Or Reality-Competition Program

Tom Bergeron, “Dancing With the Stars”

Heidi Klum, “Project Runway”

Howie Mandel, “Deal or No Deal”

Jeff Probst, “Survivor”

Ryan Seacrest, “American Idol”

Anything with Tom Bergeron is worth taking a stab at. I said it about “Hollywood Squares” and I will say it about “Dancing with the Stars.”

Should win: Tom Bergeron

Will win: Heidi Klum
