“Dexter” is without a doubt my favorite show on television right now. It’s the only thing keep me from abandoning television altogether this year since “24” is nowhere in sight. “Dexter” has it all: interesting characters, smart dialogue, shocking twists, and an all around original concept. Just when you thought it couldn’t top season one, “Dexter” just about equals it. However, people love their medical shows, and the combination of the good ol’ fashioned medical drama and Hugh Laurie’s great portrayal of Dr. Gregory House may be a little too much even for a mild mannered serial killer.

Best Drama Actor:

Should Win: Michael C. Hall

Will Win: Michael C. Hall

This is a no brainer. If the voters don’t reward the show, they must at least reward Michael C. Hall’s brilliant portrayal of Dexter Morgan, part time serial killer and blood spatter analyst. This year the show’s stakes got much higher and the character became that much more complex. Instead of playing Dexter like an animal, Hall instead infuses him with just enough humanity to give hints of the real human underneath the monster’s skin. His scenes in the substance abuse programs, where he’s really there for his addiction to mass murder, were some of the best moments on the tube last year.

Best Drama Actress:

Should Win: Holly Hunter

Will Win: Holly Hunter

Although I still love Sally Field for being the best-looking woman alive when “Smokey and the Bandit” came out, I’ve got to give it to Holly Hunter this year. I’ve managed to catch a few episodes of “Saving Grace,” and it’s rare you see such a deep, quirky character on television, especially when she’s played by a talented actress like Hunter.

Best Supporting Actor (Drama):

Should Win: William Shatner

Will Win: John Slattery

I want William Shatner to win because he deserves points simply for being around this long and not once getting on my nerves. However, “Mad Men” has such momentum behind it I really don’t think there’s anything to stop Slattery from taking home the prize.

Best Supporting Actress (Drama):

Should Win: Rachel Griffiths

Will Win: Chandra Wilson

I’ll admit I watched the first two seasons of “Grey’s Anatomy” before it became trite and mind-numbingly redundant. Chandra Wilson was the best thing about the show then and apparently still is, so I believe she’ll be winning this award. However, I gotta stick with “Six Feet Under” alum Rachel Griffiths, mainly because this lady doesn’t get the credit she deserves.

Best Comedy Series:

Should Win: 30 Rock

Will Win: The Office

While I think the combination of Baldwin, Fey and Morgan should be too much to resist, “The Office” has too many fans and too much acclaim already to fall to “30 Rock.” I still don’t know why people clamor for “The Office.” Sure, Steve Carrell is hilarious, but the show never connected with me. The show thinks it’s so smart and irreverent that at times it forgets to be funny.

Best Actor, Comedy:

Should Win: Alec Baldwin

Will Win: Alec Baldwin

The only thing funnier than Alec Baldwin’s voicemails is his character on “30 Rock.” This guy found his niche as a masterful comedic actor after people in the entertainment business thought he was a has-been. Why didn’t you stick to comedy right from the start, Alec? Why? And why leave those voicemails so that Kim Basinger can use them against you, Alec? Why?

Best Actress, Comedy:

Should Win: Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Will Win: Christina Applegate

Applegate, while funny, has stuck to some stock gimmicks and facial expressions ever since reinventing herself in “Anchorman.” She will win here, but I still think people sell Louis-Dreyfus short. Sure “The New Adventures of Old Christine” isn’t as funny as “Seinfeld,” but she’s still great in it. If voters didn’t have the “Seinfeld” baggage and Louis-Dreyfus was a no-name actress coming out of nowhere, they would be showering her with praise over her work in “Christine.”

Best Supporting Actor, Comedy:

Should Win: Neil Patrick Harris

Will Win: Jeremy Piven

This was tough. Piven is always the powerhouse as the super agent from hell in “Entourage,” but Neil Patrick Harris should be credited with coming out from under the Doogie-trap and creating a character that is more memorable and entertaining than the pint-sized doctor. Plus, he was funny in both “Harold and Kumar” movies. Way to go, NPH!

Best Supporting Actress, Comedy:

Should Win: Jean Smart

Will Win: Jean Smart

Yes, I don’t know as much about television as Jake does. No, I don’t have a problem with that. No, I am not familiar with any of these nominees. Yes, I am pushing for Jean Smart because she was once on “24.” No, this reasoning does not make sense in the comedy category.

Best Reality Competition

Should Win: Beauty and the Geek

Will Win: Top Chef

People love food and reality shows. People really love reality show competitions featuring food they will never eat; this is why “Top Chef” will win. However, “Beauty and Geek” should win for its purported last season, even though it isn’t even nominated. Why? The show is one of the few reality shows that allows people to win some money and change themselves for the better. The beauties become less shallow and the geeks become more outgoing. Everyone wins. I don’t see anyone going through any life changes while preparing some mouth-watering béarnaise sauces, do you?

Best Reality Host

Should Win: Heidi Klum

Will Win: Ryan Seacrest

Heidi Klum is the perfect host in my opinion. Well spoken, easy on the eyes, and married to Seal. She’s a beautiful woman willing to give an average looking guy a chance, and I love any woman for that. However, Ryan Seacrest is the hardest-working guy in showbiz and as much as he annoys me I have to admire his work ethic. Seacrest…out!
