Former Blue Flashes make easy Abbeville transition

After spring practice, some summer camps, and a couple of two-practice weeks at the school, the transition is nearly complete. For the first time in the Upstate, linemen are getting their chance to escape the weight room, and hit the field for workouts. Walhalla hosted the Hawg Tuff Lineman Challenge on Wednesday in hopes of building the same chemistry and camaraderie that skill athletes generate for the fall schedule.

All-area girls soccer: Walhalla's Wise takes top honor

The Lady Razorbacks went 18-3-1 and advanced to the Upper State championship behind Wise, who rewrote six individual school records. Wise was a captain and unquestioned team leader on a squad that went undefeated in Skyline region play as she collected 13 shutouts, and helped Walhalla to a top three state ranking.

Drennan’s play earned him an all-Region 1-4A selection, and an invite to the North-South All-Star game as well as a chance to join Wofford’s team in January — because the roster was full when he decided to join the Terriers. He graduated near the top of his class, and was awarded an S.C. High School League academic award.

That’s a normal response for Ivankovic, the Anderson Independent-Mail Player of the Year, who doesn’t let even a devastating injury like that to get in the way of his love for tennis. D.W. All-area softball: Wren's Saylors, Crescent's Lee share honors

The Anderson Independent-Mail Co-Players of the Year combined to win 39 games and register earned-run-averages of 0.92 or lower. That helped Wren win its first state championship, and Crescent advance to its first state title series since 2003.

All-area golf: Capps' success started with father's influence

That addiction paid off this season for the Anderson Independent-Mail Player of the Year, who finished eighth at the state tournament, and carded a 35.7 nine-hole stroke average on the season. Capps also had an 18-hole average of 75.3, and won all three matches in the North-South Challenge Cup.

All-area track and field: Stowers sets sights on bigger goals

The Anderson Independent-Mail Track Athlete of the Year has won nine gold medals at the state track meet, including her 2006 state record time in the 100 hurdles of 13.90 seconds. Each year, though, the expectations around her seem to balloon as her name continues to be mentioned on larger scales.
